Update from Howard – Sept 6

Dear Friends,

Trust you enjoyed a terrific Labor Day weekend.

God’s view of work: Labor Day certainly is a good time to reflect on our work and the Lord’s perspective of it. I’ll never forget that first time I learned that the very first thing that God did with Adam was to “Put him in the garden to cultivate and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). In the sinless environment of the garden of Eden, God instituted work for our benefit!

And if that’s not enough, do you know who is your real boss? Colossians 3:23-24 tell us, “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men . . . it is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” Amazing! We actually work for Jesus Christ, not the person who hands out our paycheck. And because we work for Christ, our attitude toward work and those who are our superiors should reflect the Lord . . . I only wish I’d known that when I was serving in the Navy in Viet Nam under Lt. Commander Mac! My attitude wasn’t exactly the best…lol.

Calling all Coaches: We decided in March when we launched our half hour call-in radio program, MoneyWise, that we wanted to respond to everyone who called asking us a financial question. Unfortunately, we’re not able to have everyone on the program, so we follow-up by connecting all of them with a coach. We’ve been wonderfully blessed to have Sam and Sandy Register serve as the volunteer coordinator of our coaches. But they needed to resign so they could home school their three grandchildren . . . talk about blessed grandkids!

Soooooo, if you or someone you know would like to serve in this capacity, I’d be grateful is you could contact my assistant, Kelly, at klaughridge@compass1.org. Please pray with us that the Lord will bring us just the right person!

Business By The Book: About 8 years ago, the Lord prompted me to author a small group study and a DVD series based on Larry Burkett’s classic book, Business By The Book. Our president, Dave Rae, is now working on a complete refreshment and improvement of these materials. He convened a wonderful focus group of people involved in ministry to the business community last week to secure their input. The time was fantastic! The Lord’s hand is clearly on this project, and we hope to begin conducting pilot groups before the end of the year.

Your Money Counts audio book: Whew . . . finally finished recording the last chapter of the audio book for Your Money Counts. It’s our objective to have all of our written books in audio book format as well. So many people today prefer to listen rather than read, and we want to make it available to them. We’ll let you know when it’s been edited and it’s ready to download.

What should I invest my money today?: That’s one of the most common questions I’m asked. We’ve just assembled a small group of godly investors to work on helping to answer that question. We’re going to study and meditate on different passages from the Bible dealing with how to handle resources in times of financial upheaval. Then communicate weekly as we pray and fast for God’s direction. We’ll let you know what we’re learning . . .

Thankful for you!

Warmly in Christ,
Howard
