Update From Howard 6/27

Dear Friends,

Field Team: Three times a year our entire field team convenes for a time of prayer, fellowship and sharing best practices. We’re meeting this week starting Monday evening through Thursday breakfast outside of Columbus, Ohio. Dan Schilling and his wife Cheri along with their 6 sons: Caleb, Joshua, David, Isaac, Jeremiah and Jesse (they love the Old Testament) will host the team on their farm. Dan is an extraordinarily capable and faithful person. His contribution to Compass has been huge. We’re going to do two very special things: (1) The raspberries are in so I’ll probably get OD on them, praise God! and (2) We’re going to celebrate their mortgage burning . . . how cool!

Adversity: This week I was scheduled to meet three close friends who are all in the midst of a crisis. One is struggling to recover from a stroke. Another lost his large size business to bankruptcy and, although he is a person of high integrity, is facing criminal indictment. The third was under so much stress at work, that he left the very profitable family business. In addition, we had several callers on the half-hour MoneyWise program facing enormously challenging times. It seems that everywhere people are wrestling with a crisis of some kind.

I am rereading an excellent book, Trusting God by Jerry Bridges, that has helped me understand the Lord purpose in adversity. In John 15:1-2 Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cut off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will even be more fruitful.” Think about it: Healthy vines require both nourishment and pruning. Through the Word of God we are nourished, but through adversity we are pruned. And why? So our character will be transformed and we will be even more fruitful.

American Bible Society grant: Last week I asked you to join us in praying for the Lord to provide by June 30th, the funding necessary to fully qualify for a matching grant offered Compass by the American Bible Society. This is the first phase of a three year grant which will enable us to complete all of our materials. Our precious Lord heard all our prayers, and He graciously moved on the hearts of generous people and the match was met at just about the last possible minute! I remember what Larry Burkett used to say, “God is rarely early, but He’s never late.” I want to THANK all of you who joined us in prayer and even sacrificially gave.

It’s Hot: I enjoy trying to walk briskly for an hour, six days a week. But this summer has taken a little of the joy out of the routine. Even before dawn it is hot and muggy in central Florida. I’ve read that when we perspire, it helps to cleanse our pores. Well, I must have some of the cleanest pores around!

Warmly in Christ,

Howard
